Neck Swelling

Neck Swelling – Symptoms, Causes, Treatments

The most common causes of swelling in the neck are the build-up of fluid in neck tissue or inflammation of neck tissue. The source of inflammation is often an infection. Inflammation can also be caused by neck injuries, or it can occur following surgical or medical treatments for neck conditions, according to a neck pain specialist in NJ.

If you have a bacterial or viral infection, the infection can cause the lymph nodes in the neck to swell. Swollen lymph nodes (lymphadenitis) are quite common in people with infections. Once the infection has cleared up, the swelling usually goes down. The thyroid glands located in the neck can also swell as people get older.

In most cases of mild swelling, there is no need to look for any special treatment. If the swelling is accompanied by any pain or discomfort, using over the counter remedies can reduce pain. Anti-inflammatory or pain-relieving drugs can be used to ease the discomfort. Swelling may also be reduced by applying a cold compress to the swollen area.

If the swelling is severe, it is advisable to arrange an appointment with your doctor. If the swelling in the neck is accompanied by breathing problems, swelling of the tongue, the lips or other parts of the face, this should be regarded as a medical emergency, as it could indicate a severe allergic reaction. It is also advisable to seek medical help immediately if there is a problem with swallowing accompanied by a fever. These symptoms are often signs of severe infections such as mumps.

If you try home remedies but the swelling persists, then it is advisable to see your doctor. Thyroid problems can persist, but they can be successfully treated with the appropriate medicine. It is worth bearing in mind that the growth of lumps in the neck can be mistaken for swelling. If the apparently swollen part feels hard, this could be a lump rather than swelling, and it is important to get a proper medical diagnosis. If you have had lumps for some time but they start to get bigger, you should also get a medical diagnosis.

Neck swelling may be caused by injury as a result of an accident or repetitive strain. It can even be the result of poor posture. This problem can be helped by various forms of therapy, including physical therapy, chiropractic therapy, massage therapy, or orthopedic treatment.
