How To Organise Insurance For People With Medical Conditions

Finding a good deal on travel insurance can take some time, especially if you have a pre-existing medical condition that you have to declare but it is imperative to declare it rather than try to avoid the declaration to get a better deal. If you need to claim on your insurance and the company finds out that you failed to declare something when you took the policy out, it will become null and void and the good deal you swindled won’t be worth anything.

However, it is understandable that because it can be so hard to get hold of insurance when you have a pre-existing medical conditionthat many people find it really frustrating when shopping around for a deal. You can find cover for people with medical conditions by searching online and it is often a good idea to search through specialist providers, as regular insurance companies may not be able to help.

Medical Conditions

There are all kinds of medical conditions that need to be declared when you take out insurance, including but not limited to the following:

  • Previously suffered from a stroke or heart attack
  • Cancer
  • Motor Neurone Disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Asthma
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • HIV or AIDS

When you travel to a foreign country, you will need to be able to take out travel insurance to cover you in the event of an illness or accident, as well as to protect you for a range of other things including lost luggage, trip cancellations or theft.

Specialist Cover

Having a pre-existing medical condition doesn’t make it impossible to take out insurance but it is often a good idea to get insurance with a provider that specialises in this type of specialist cover. Even if you think your medical condition is not serious or life threatening, if you suffered from it a long time ago but not anymore or if you don’t consider it to be something that will affect you during your trip, you will still need to declare it to err on the side of caution.

If you have a pre-existing medical condition, you will need to do the following:

  • Set out a budget to spend on insurance
  • Think carefully about how much risk you will be putting yourself at by taking the trip (if any)
  • Get a doctor’s certificate outlining your condition

It is important to understand that just because you have a pre-existing medical condition it doesn’t mean that you can’t get insurance but it does mean that you might need to shop around to find a specialist provider.

If you have a medical condition, then you will need to declare it when you take out your travel insurance and failing to do so will likely result in you not being able to make a claim, even if the claim is actually for something else and failing to declare it is simply not worth the risk.
